Open Quarter-Mile Times Dataset

This is an open dataset of 590 real quarter-mile runs timed by FastTrack users between 2026-04-21 and 2026-09-27. Unlike published quarter-mile figures, which come from professional drivers on prepped strips, every number here was recorded by an owner driving their own car. We report best, median, and 90th-percentile elapsed times plus a median trap speed for each group, so you can see the real spread rather than a single headline figure.

The real-world distribution

Across all 590 runs, the quickest is 10.36s and the median is 17.01s. About 10% of runs are quicker than 13.49s, and 90% come in under 22.82s. The median trap speed is 71.5 mph. The median ET sits well into the daily-driver range because this is real logged driving, not a strip full of built cars.

Methodology

Every run was timed by the FastTrack app, which fuses GPS Doppler velocity with the phone's 100 Hz accelerometer through a Kalman-style estimator and then refines the result with a backward smoothing pass. Elapsed time runs from launch to the 1,320-foot mark; trap speed is the velocity at that mark. See how FastTrack measures accuracy for the full explanation.

Runs are excluded if they are marked invalid by the automatic sanity checker, flagged by an admin, deleted by their owner, set to private, or predate the 2026-04-21 validator rewrite. These are the same integrity gates the public leaderboards use, so a run hidden from the leaderboard never appears here.

Groups are published only above a minimum sample size — 5 runs for a model, 8 for a make — because a median drawn from two runs is noise. Times are aggregated per make/model, not per vehicle. The dataset is aggregate-only by construction: no usernames, user IDs, vehicle IDs, run IDs, locations, or timestamps — only grouped statistics.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good quarter mile time, based on real data?

Across 590 GPS-timed runs in this dataset, the median quarter mile is about 17.01 seconds, the quickest is 10.36 seconds, and roughly 90% of runs come in under 22.82 seconds. That median is far slower than the sub-13-second figures enthusiasts quote because it includes ordinary daily drivers, not just performance cars. A run under about 13.49 seconds already sits in the quickest 10% of everything logged.

How is this different from published quarter-mile times?

Manufacturer and magazine quarter-mile figures come from professional drivers launching prepared cars on a prepped strip. Every number here was recorded by an ordinary owner on a real road, so the medians reflect what cars actually run day to day rather than their best-case potential. The best column lands close to published figures; the median shows typical logged behavior.

How were these times measured?

Each run was timed by the FastTrack app on an iPhone or Android phone, fusing GPS Doppler velocity with the phone's 100 Hz accelerometer through a Kalman-style estimator and a backward smoothing pass. Trap speed is the velocity at the 1,320-foot mark. Controlled comparisons put quarter-mile ET within about 0.04 s of dedicated hardware, a slightly wider gap than 0-60 because distance-based metrics depend more on GPS antenna quality.

What is trap speed?

Trap speed is how fast the car is travelling as it crosses the quarter-mile finish line. It reflects a car's power-to-weight more than its launch, so two cars with the same ET can trap very different speeds. The median trap speed across this dataset is 71.5 mph.

Can I use this data?

Yes. The dataset is published under CC BY 4.0 and the full CSV is a free download with no signup. Attribute it to FastTrack with a link to this page.

How often is it updated?

The dataset regenerates on every site deploy directly from the run database, so the figures here track the live leaderboard rather than a periodic snapshot.
