The Trap Speed Formula
Trap speed is the speed you are carrying as you cross the quarter-mile line. This calculator estimates it from power-to-weight using the standard drag-racing formula:
- Trap Speed = 234 × (HP ÷ Weight)^(1/3)
Because it depends on the cube root of power-to-weight, trap speed grows slowly with power — doubling horsepower only adds about 26% to trap speed. That is why the last few mph are the hardest to find.
Why Trap Speed Beats ET for Measuring Power
Trap speed correlates with power-to-weight far better than ET because it is much less sensitive to traction and launch. A bad launch — wheelspin, a slow 60-foot, a soft dump of the clutch — costs tenths of a second on ET but barely dents the speed you reach by the end of the strip.

What the Formula Cannot See

- Gearing: tall gears that run out of revs before the line — or short gears that force an extra shift — cost mph
- Shift points: shifting off the power band, or a slow shift near the traps, leaves speed on the table
- Air density: hot air and high altitude reduce power and trap speed versus cool, sea-level conditions
